Residential Training in endoscopic surgery and Laser surgery--St. Luce"s University,Brussles Dr R. B. Chatterjee is a renowned, senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist of Calcutta, India.

Dr Rudra B Chatterjee or RB as he is often fondly called did his basic medical training from the prestigious Calcutta National Medical College, graduating with distinction in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in his final year medical schooling. He did his basic post-graduate training in Calcutta, India, before coming to the UK in 1963 for higher training. While in the UK, he did his obstetrics and gynaecology training in and around London working at some of the renowned hospitals in those days. He achieved membership of the RCOG in 1965. He went on to do his surgical and urological training in the north of England and attained the FRCS (Edin) in surgery in 1969.

He returned to India later that year and went on to set up a hugely successful practise treating women with many different and difficult obstetric and gynaecological conditions over the next 35years. He has treated patients from all around the world and has been one of the leading practitioners of Calcutta. His wide breath of surgical skills has helped him perform a range of surgeries from radical oncological and urological procedures to complex laparoscopic procedures. He was awarded the Fellowship of the RCOG in 1983.

Dr. Chatterjee has been a pioneer for Laparoscopic surgery in eastern India and started first performing laparoscopic procedures way back in the late seventies and early eighties. In 1994, he took intensive residential training in endoscopic surgery and Laser surgery at St. Luce’s University at Brussels to further his advanced Laparoscopic skills.

By the time he retired a few years ago he had performed more than 5,000 laparoscopic procedures. He has been the Head of Department and Director of services of some the leading hospitals of the city. He has been a keen trainer and mentor to many trainees who are now established Consultants in different parts of the world. During his working years he was actively involved in charitable work, devoting one day a week in performing surgeries for the poor and needy women who had travelled far from distant villages for much needed medical attention.

He has been an active member of the All India Committee of the RCOG and FOGSI. He has chaired many prestigious meetings and sessions at various conferences and has also been an invited guest speaker. In 2009, he was awarded the highest lifetime achievement award for his contribution to Women’s health by the Calcutta Medical Research Institute.

RB’s wife is an anaesthetist; his daughter is a practising pharmacist in USA and his son who has taken his footsteps, works and lives in the UK.
