Mr Irvine was born in Hampstead, North London, brought up in Islington and qualified from Charing Cross Hospital in 1981, MRCOG 1986, MD 1994, FRCOG 2002. After House and Senior House Officer positions at The West London Hospital and The Westminster Hospital, he was appointed as registrar at the Royal Free Hospital and then St Bartholomew’s Hospital. His MD was written while at the Royal Free Hospital in London. After a Senior Registrar position in Newport, Wales, he was appointed as Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Hospital at Watord General Hospital in 1995. He was Lead Clinician in Women’s Services for Research and Development, and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University College, London. After 38 years of clinical practice, and 24 years of a consultant , he has now retired from clinical practice.

He is involved with the interview process at Impreial College and works on widening participation (WP) in medical school application and interviews.

He has a major interest in ectopic pregnancy, including aetiology, epidemiology and fluctuations in ectopic pregnancy rates. He has further developed laparoscopic surgical skills for the management of ectopic pregnancy. Mr Irvine has published widely in peer reviewed journals and lectures internationally on various aspects of ectopic pregnancy.

Outside medicine his interests include cycling, gardening and collecting vintage watches, with a special interest in Longines, and Oris. His sporting interest is in Formula 1 motor racing. He enjoys the work of Croft and Perry and John Sullivan.

He also has an allotment and a nature reserve with a river frontage onto a chalk stream.
