Perspective from a Medical Student
Ectopic pregnancy occurs in about 1 in every 100 pregnancies. It can be life threatening and all haemodynamically unstable patients require urgent medical resuscitation and surgical treatment. Wherever we end up in our careers, it is always important to remember that in all settings, we will still be faced with this emergency scenario. Whether we are identifying acutely unwell patients and making appropriate referrals in busy A&Es, recognising at risk patients and emergency situations in GP practices, or performing the surgery as Specialty Trainees, a good understanding of ectopic pregnancy, its presentations, and management, is vital for our work and the care of our patients, as future doctors.
